If you’re on the lookout for a new set of wheels, you could get an amazing deal and save thousands of pounds by buying before the end of August.

A number of manufacturers are offering huge discounts on new cars as they look to unload their existing stock before new, tougher emissions regulations come into force on the 1st September.

The upcoming rule changes will require all new cars to meet the standards of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test (WLTP) and those that don’t will be incredibly difficult to sell.

To make sure manufacturers get something for those cars that would fail the new WLTP regulations, they are offering up to 20% off certain models – a blow for their bottom line but a huge win for car buyers.

Manufacturers such as Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Citroen and Peugeot are all offering huge discounts on new cars to entice potential buyers to purchase before the deadline.

It’s clear that these discounts are already proving popular as July saw an increase in new car registrations from last year, with the offloading of WLTP failing vehicles believed to be the driving force behind it.

Research by WhatCar? found that the Citroen C4 Spacetourer had the largest discount of 20.5% off if bought before September 1st – a massive minimum saving of £4,147.

Other vehicles that they have found to have substantial August discounts include:

  • Citroen DS3 Hatchback – 17% discount (£2,617 minimum cash saving)
  • Renault Clio – 11% (£1,439)
  • Peugeot 308 – 10.5% (£1,971)
  • Mercedes GLC Estate – 9.8% (£3,379)
  • Skoda Octavia (diesel) – 9.3% (£1,758)

What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford said:

“Our latest analysis shows that there are some incredible deals out there at a time when discounts are traditionally harder to come by,

“Buyers have the choice of stock that the car manufacturers have to register before the new emissions regulations come in, or stock that they are keen to sell as a result of this normally being one of the busiest times of the year, when the September number plate change comes into effect.”
