The UK staycation is still going strong, with over half of drivers (53%) planning a local getaway this summer. But many holidaymakers are taking the road less travelled - with beautiful scenery a priority for 52% of drivers when planning a long drive. 

Motorways are, of course, essential for fast and efficient travel. However, when looking to enjoy the sights, new research from Tempcover has revealed two in five (41%) drivers describe motorway-heavy road trips as ‘boring’. But despite wanting a prettier drive, many motorists admit they lack the route knowledge or time to plan an alternative path.

A great road trip should start the moment you step into the car, not just when you reach your destination.

To give holidaymakers an easier way to discover stunning scenic detours alongside their usual routes, Tempcover has launched a new Scenic Route Finder tool. Drivers simply enter their start and end UK postcodes to uncover bespoke, scenic alternatives to the fast lane.

To kick things off, Tempcover has partnered with musician Ricky Wilson, frontman of Kaiser Chiefs. Having clocked up thousands of miles touring festivals and gigs across the country, Ricky knows the value of mixing fast travel with scenic exploration, and he has loaded his personal favourite spots directly into the tool.

Some of Ricky's Top Spots:

  1. Dartmoor (Nearly Home Trees) - A wild, beautiful national park in the South West. The B3212 cuts right through it, offering scenic views and leading straight to the Nearly Home Trees - one of Ricky’s favourite havens in the area.
  2. Holme Moss (Bands in the Park - Green Head) - A stunning high moorland in the Peak District, sitting right on the border between Kirklees in West Yorkshire and High Peak in Derbyshire. It makes a fantastic scenic stop - especially when you combine the drive with a trip to see Greenhead Park.
  3. Queensferry Crossing (Edinburgh Castle) - Edinburgh offers an endless array of iconic views -with the soaring Queensferry Crossing and historical Edinburgh Castle ranking high among Ricky’s absolute favourites.
  4. Northumberland Coast: A spectacular coastal route in Northeast England. Ricky recommends driving this designated National Landscape (AONB) pass, which takes you right past Bamburgh Lighthouse and offers sweeping views to the lighthouses guarding the Farne Islands.

Whether you're driving toward the spectacular vistas of the Scottish Highlands (which 34% of drivers say rival the Norwegian Fjords) or re-routing off the M25 to take in the Surrey Hills (compared by 12% to Tuscany), the tool makes it easier than ever to unlock Britain’s best landscapes.
