What is one-day van insurance?

One-day van insurance is an insurance policy that covers you to use another van for 24 hours.

In these situations, taking out a costly and lengthy insurance policy is often a waste of time and money. The good news is that you can get cover for a van for just a day. This means that you avoid the cost and hassle of arranging annual insurance.

Getting a van insurance policy for one day is so easy – just follow these three simple steps:

  1. Enter a few details about yourself and the van
  2. Confirm that you’re happy with the price and details of your policy
  3. Pay for your policy and get your documents emailed instantly

If you think that you’ll need longer than a day, you can still get a temporary van insurance policy to suit your needs. With policies from just one hour, to a few weeks, up to one month, you can find the perfect van insurance for you.

How does our van insurance day cover work?

If you insure a van for a day, you get all the comprehensive cover of a yearly policy without the hefty price tag. Annual insurance is time-consuming and expensive – it may work out cheaper per day but you’ll end up paying far more for cover that you just don’t need.

One-day van insurance is a cost-effective option with long-term benefits. Temporary van cover will generally last for 24 hours and is separate, standalone policy so the owner of the van’s No Claims Discount is protected and there are no long-term contracts. This means that you’re not tied to anything.

Why use one-day van insurance?

Temporary van insurance is a quick and straightforward option when you need cover for a short period of around 24 hours. There are some occasions on which you’ll benefit more from 1-day van cover than opting for annual cover, including:

  • Moving house and you need to drive for a day or two.
  • The van that you need for work is in for repairs.
  • Carrying one-off large items.
  • Insuring a new employee for a short period.
  • Transporting family members to university.
  • Test-driving a new van.

Because of the flexibility of temporary van insurance, it’s perfect for domestic or business use. Most of us don’t have a van to hand but getting the right insurance to borrow one is simple and straightforward with 1-day van cover.

It’s also ideal for small businesses, van fleets and tradespeople because one-day van insurance is so quick and easy to buy. Even if you need it at the last minute, you can rely on it.

What does one-day van insurance cover?

With comprehensive cover as standard on one-day van insurance from Tempcover, you’re covered for any damage to yourself, your van and any third parties involved in an accident.

What’s covered with daily van insurance

  • Fully comprehensive insurance on policies from 1 hour to 28 days
  • Accidental and malicious damage to your van
  • Loss or damage to your van caused by fire, theft, or attempted theft
  • Legal liabilities for injury or damage to another person or their property
  • Personal belongings (definitions may differ by insurer)
  • Driving in the UK
  • In some instances driving in the EU with the third-party or equivariant level

What's optional with daily van insurance

  • Excess Reduction Cover, reducing your policy excess to as close as £100 as possible

What's not covered with daily van insurance

  • The excess you agreed to pay
  • Release from an impound (unless you buy a specific temporary impounded van policy)
  • Additional drivers – we can only cover the driver named on the policy
  • Cover for the loss or damage to a vehicle, trailer, trailer-caravan or broken-down vehicle when being towed by the insured van
  • A sole claim or separate cover for broken/damaged glass including the windscreen

Tempcover works with a panel of insurers to ensure that we can provide temporary van insurance for as many drivers as possible. Because of this, full details of cover may differ depending on the insurer. Please double-check the policy wording before buying, to confirm what your policy specifically covers.

One-day van insurance FAQs

Can I get van insurance for more than one day?

At Tempcover, we offer cost-effective short-term car and van insurance that ranges from one day to 28 days. Whether you need cover for 24 hours, two days or more, you’ll find a temporary van insurance solution that fits your needs. You can find out more about the levels of temporary van insurance cover available at Tempcover that are suitable for all manner of situations.

Can I get van insurance for less than a day?

We provide quick and affordable short-term van insurance with policies starting from just one hour! Our hourly temporary insurance is designed to provide drivers with maximum flexibility and between 1-12 hours of cover.

Whatever the situation on your hands, you can have the peace of mind that our policies allow you to use your van legally straight away and keep you covered in the case of an incident.

Can I get day van insurance at the same time as annual insurance?

Yes, you can have one-day van cover at the same time as your annual insurance policy. If you need to make a claim, you won’t be able to claim on both policies as this is considered fraud. Also, in the event of a claim on your 24-hours van insurance, your NDC will not be affected.

Can I drive someone else's van?

You can only drive someone else’s van and still be covered if your insurance policy has a ‘driving other vehicles’ clause in its terms and conditions. The DOV clause is most often included on a fully comprehensive insurance policy and provides you with temporary cover on a vehicle that is not yours.

If you plan on driving somebody else’s van, then you should consider getting a temporary one-day van insurance policy which ensures that you’re covered. To be eligible for DOV cover, you must meet certain requirements. These can include:

  • The vehicle doesn’t belong to the driver and has not been hired to them
  • The driver has the permission of the owner
  • The driver is aged 25 or over
  • The driver’s personal policy includes the driving other vehicles extension
  • The vehicle is insured

Driving another person’s van without the appropriate cover can result in a conviction for driving without motor insurance so it’s important to check this with your insurer.

How much does daily van insurance cost?

The cost of one-day van insurance will depend on the policyholder’s details. Drivers with specific details that insurers have historically and statistically seen as high risk will probably pay more to cover their increased chance of making a claim.

You’ll usually find that the price of your annual van insurance is reflected in what you pay for short-term van insurance. If you are used to paying higher-than-average prices for your regular insurance, you will probably pay more for your 24-hour van cover – this is because the premiums are calculated using the same details.

For example, if you are a new driver, you can expect to pay more for your van insurance as you’re likely to have much less experience on the road, so are considered more likely to be involved in an incident.

This is not because you as an individual are expected to have an accident more than others; it’s because, statistically, people with the same or similar details have been more likely to claim in the past. Unfortunately, you are charged more to cover your increased chance of claiming.

Likewise, if you have been driving for 30 years and want to insure a cheaper van in a quiet village location, your policy will cost far less.

The factors that determine the price of your policy include:

  • Your age, location, driving history, occupation and vehicle
  • Your vehicle’s value
  • For what you use the vehicle.
