Daily car insurance is a great option if you just need to drive for 24 hours. Whether you’re heading on a road trip, your car is off the road or you need a bigger vehicle to transport some larger items as you move house, it’s a quick, easy and flexible option.
Available in an instant and comprehensive as standard, with no long-term commitments, it will help get you where you need to go when you need car insurance for a day.
Usually, yes. You’ll need insurance to drive a friend’s car unless you have a policy (e.g. on your own car) that clearly states you’re covered for other vehicles. If you don’t have this cover, daily insurance offers complete cover for 24 hours - meaning you only pay for the time you need to drive a friend or family member’s car.
You must have a valid insurance policy to drive a car in the UK.
We are only able to provide cover for one driver per vehicle. If you require cover for two drivers, you will need two separate day insurance policies.
If you’re learning to drive, you will have to get specific learner driver insurance. You will be able to take this out for 24 hours, but will have to meet certain eligibility criteria (along with the person supervising you).
Yes, you can get day insurance alongside your annual policy. This is because they are completely separate policies. Day insurance allows you to drive another car with comprehensive cover and complete peace of mind.

Get your quoteYes, daily car insurance lets you insure a car for 24 hours. It’s quick, easy and can be cost-effective as you’re only paying for the time you need. If you don’t quite need a day, we also offer hourly car insurance.
You can buy separate daily insurance policies as and when you need. This flexibility makes it easy to get another policy (and 24 hours’ cover!) if, for example, your car is stuck in the garage longer than expected.
Temporary car insurance is the term used for a range of different short-term insurance options. One-day car insurance is just one of these. It allows you to take out insurance for 24 hours. If you want to extend this cover, you will need to buy a new policy.
Yes – temporary insurance is flexible to your situation. From an hour up to a month, Tempcover can help you find the right policy:
You can get temporary car insurance from an hour up to 28 days. Our flexible options mean you can either get a two-day policy or buy new cover each day at a time – whether for a weekend away or just in case things don’t go to plan.
With one-day car insurance, you only pay for the 24 hours you need. This can save you money but the cost will vary depending on factors including your driving history and type of vehicle. Tempcover’s daily insurance comes comprehensive as standard and is designed to fit around your life.
No, you do not need to own or be the registered keeper to take out daily insurance. You need to have a full driving licence, be aged between 17 and 77 years old, and have no criminal convictions.

Yes. We offer day insurance on a range of vehicles. Get the cover that’s right for you:
If you have an accident, you should contact your insurer’s dedicated claims team. Please contact them on the number displayed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance or policy wording. If you cannot find this, please contact our Customer Experience team who will be able to point you in the right direction.
If your policy is for 28 days or less in duration, once purchased you will not be able to make any changes or additions to the policy, including the vehicle registration or amendments to cover, though you can cancel your policy at any time.
Due to the short-term nature of the policy, once the policy is live you will not be entitled to a refund of any monies paid if you cancel your policy. This is in line with the rules set by the Financial Conduct Authority.
If your policy is for 28 days or less, you can cancel it at any time. However, due to the short-term nature of this policy, there will be no refund available. You can cancel anytime by contacting us here. For more information, please read our Refund policy.
Once you buy your policy, we’ll update the Motor Insurance Database (MID). This will show the authorities that you’re legally covered to drive the car in question.
We update the MID daily, but your policy may expire before your details can be seen due to the short-term nature of temporary insurance. While it may take time to appear on the MID, you can rest assured that your insurance is in force.
We recommend you print your certificate of insurance or keep the digital copy on your phone while driving. This will act as valid proof of your 24-hour car insurance in case there are any issues. If the police do pull you over, they’ll call our phone number to confirm that you’re insured.
It won’t matter what type of cover you have on your car. You can still get it taxed – and it can even be a useful option if you’re in the process of getting it done. Just remember there may be a delay in your day insurance showing on the MID. So, it’s worth having all your documentation on hand to confirm that your car is both taxed and insured. Don’t forget – you must have a valid policy to drive a car in the UK.
