When you’re involved in an incident that wasn’t your fault, the last thing you want to worry about is having to pay legal costs to recover losses.
With legal expenses insurance, you get peace of mind that these costs are covered, and you can pursue legal action with financial support.
You can add legal expenses insurance to your short-term policy for that extra bit of security when borrowing a vehicle or using one you’re not already insured to drive.
What is legal expenses insurance?
Legal expenses insurance provides cover for up to £100,000 for legal costs that may occur if you’re involved in an incident that wasn’t your fault.
With this insurance, you can get up to £100,000 to help pay for the recovery of any uninsured losses that may happen following an accident, for example:
- Loss of earnings
- Travel expenses
- Damage to personal effects
- Seek compensation for any injuries you or your passengers may have received
- Towing and storage
- Recovery of out-of-pocket expenses from any negligent third party
Do I need legal expenses insurance?
There is no legal requirement to have legal expenses insurance and you can still purchase short-term cover from Tempcover without it.
Legal expenses insurance can however be a helpful policy to have if the costs of legal action following an accident would be too expensive without support.
If, however, you could afford the cost of pursuing legal claims or wouldn’t want to pursue losses after an accident, you may not need it.
For what can be a small fee alongside your short-term motor policy, having legal expenses insurance could save you money in the long run.
What you’re covered for with legal expenses insurance
If you purchase legal expenses insurance, you are covered for up £100,000 in legal costs to recover losses following a road traffic collision where someone else is responsible in the UK or Europe.
You will not be insured for claims that are your fault, have less than a 51% chance of success, any costs not approved by the underwriter in writing, or claims for stress, emotional or psychological injury unless you have also suffered a physical injury.
