Must-have car accessories

We’ve recently covered the must-have apps you need for your car, but don’t forget about the more physical accessories that can make your journey safer, smarter and more secure.

Must-have car tech

  • Dash cams - This small camera records your entire journey and can be used to show who was at fault if you were to have an accident.
  • Wireless chargers - Keep your devices fully charged while on the go with one of these handy phone accessories.
  • Phone mounts - You can’t hold your phone while driving (unless you want a CU80 conviction). A solid mount will let you drive hands-free.
  • AirTags - Pop an AirTag on your key and never lose it again. Stick one in the boot or somewhere in your car and you should be able to track where it’s gone, if it were to be stolen.
  • OBD2 scanner - Plug this diagnostic tool into your dashboard and discover the meanings behind engine fault codes and dashboard lights.

What should I do if I have an older car?

You can use technology such as FM transmitters and Bluetooth adapters to connect an older car and play audio. Some dash cams also feature Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to connect to a smartphone.

Wheel trims can help add a fresh new style to the car, while a car cover and sun shades can protect it from the elements. On a journey and need a little more space? Consider installing roof racks or bars, but be careful not to overload the vehicle.

Safety accessories for your car

  • Jump starter/Battery charger - Ever been in a car and it just won’t start? Keeping jump-start leads or a dual jump starter-battery charger can help get you moving.
  • Tyre pressure gauge and inflator - Tyres feeling unsafe or tread depth on the low side? Use a gauge to measure the air pressure and see if you need to inflate them.
  • Scraper - It might be easy to forget, but an ice scraper is essential when you want to get moving in the colder temperatures.
  • First aid kit - We could all have an accident at any time. Keeping a mini first aid kit on your person (or in your car) is a must.
  • Breathalyser - An alcolock, or Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device, is fitted to a vehicle’s ignition system. It requires a breath test before the engine can be started and is used in many different European and worldwide countries.
  • Faraday key fob - A Faraday bag, pouch or box blocks thieves from using boosters to amplify your key signal and steal your vehicle. Just be aware that they tend to last around 1 to 3 years with daily use.

Car accessories for comfort

  • Car bin - Don’t leave your car in a mess. Enjoy a far more pleasant driving experience by using a handy car bin that can be emptied on a regular basis.
  • Car vacuum - Get rid of the dust and muck and get to all those hard-to-reach places with a handheld vacuum.
  • Microfibre cloth - Keep your windows and exterior streak free when washing your car. Microfibre cloths are effective at cleaning with just water.
  • Boot organiser - Fed up of all the equipment rattling around your boot while moving? Store them in a handy organiser.
  • Rubber car mat sets - Protect your car’s interior from mud, dirt and spills with durable, wipe-clean mats. You can also protect the bottom of your boot with a boot mat. Perfect if you love spending time outdoors.
  • Swivel cushions/Comfort cushions - Finding long journeys uncomfortable. Car seat cushions and covers can help improve your posture by providing ergonomic support. Swivel cushions can help those with limited mobility enter and exit a car with less pain.

Having car accessories like these don't just make your car look and feel better; they’ll help make your journey safer and more comfortable - for both you and your passengers.
