What age can you get temporary car insurance?

Tempcover’s temporary car insurance policies are available for ages 17-78.

How long does temporary car insurance last?

You can get Tempcover’s temporary car insurance for time periods ranging from one hour to 28 days. You can request what time the policy starts according to your needs.

Can I drive a car with temporary insurance?

Yes, you can, providing you fit the acceptance criteria noted on the product pages.

Tempcover’s temporary car insurance policies are typically available to those who:

  • Are aged between 17-78 years old.
  • Are holders of a full UK or EU driving licence with no more than 7 points in the last three years.
  • Have been a permanent UK resident for the last 12 months or be a British expatriate.
  • Have no criminal convictions.
  • Have not had a previous policy of insurance declared void by an insurer.

There are also some restrictions around the cars Tempcover can insure. Each car must:

  • Be valued between £1,500 and £65,000.
  • Be taxed and in a roadworthy condition with a valid MOT.
  • Not be modified in any way except if designed to aid disabled drivers.
  • Be a right-hand drive car with no more than 8 seats.
  • Not be declared SORN.

Other vehicles (e.g. van, motorbike) and products (e.g. learner driver insurance) may have different requirements.

Each insurer on our panel has its own eligibility criteria. Please pay close attention to the Proposer’s Declaration.

What details do I need to apply for Tempcover?

You’ll need all the details of the driver who wishes to take out the insurance, including their contact details, address, date of birth, and details of the vehicle. It also helps to have the licence number handy because you may be asked to provide this throughout the application.

Can I take out cover if I have a conviction?

In order to purchase a policy with us, you will be presented with our terms and conditions which you will have to formally agree to before proceeding to payment. It’s important that you set a few minutes aside to read through the insurer’s declaration in full, as this will indicate what is accepted based on the quote you’ve been generated.

Depending on the insurer, we can offer insurance for those who meet the following:

  • Have 7 or less penalty points accumulated in the last 2 years
  • Do not have an Anti-Social Behaviour Order or Criminal Behaviour Order
  • Have no criminal convictions not considered ‘Spent’

A criminal conviction refers to an individual who is found guilty of a crime that isn’t related to driving. For example, a speeding fine (SP30), or failure to stop after an accident (AC10) are considered driving convictions.

It’s important that you know whether your convictions are spent, or how long they may remain on your record for.  We recommend you check your driving record with the DVLA via the GOV.UK website.

What types of passport do you accept?

You can obtain a quote from us using a UK/NI/EU & EEA licence.  However, if during the application process Tempcover, or our Insurers, need to perform any additional validation checks, these can only be successfully completed with a UK Passport.

What is my licence number? Where do I find it?

Your licence number should be on the photocard licence you hold, for UK licences it is listed as point 5.

If you can’t locate this, you can log in to the DVLA website to retrieve it.

Can I use my EU Licence number?

You can obtain a quote from us using a UK/NI/EU & EEA licence.  However, if during the application process Tempcover, or our Insurers, need to perform any additional validation checks, these can only be successfully completed with a UK Driving Licence or UK Passport.

Can I use my Northern Ireland issued licence?

While Northern Ireland is, of course, part of the United Kingdom, Northern Irish driving licences have a different format of numbering. For this reason we are unfortunately unable to use them for validation purposes. If you have selected that you hold a Northern Irish driving licence, and further validation is required, then our system may ask you for you passport number instead.

Why won’t you accept my licence number?

Sometimes when purchasing a policy, you’ll be asked to provide your licence number. If you’re getting a message that states the information does not match or isn’t valid, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • Check your licence is UK registered (Northern Ireland and Isle of Man have a different format, and sadly, therefore, can’t be accepted)
  • Check your first and last name are spelt correctly, and you haven’t used a nickname or different name on the form itself
  • Check your date of birth is entered correctly
  • Check that the licence number you’re giving belongs to the driver you’re insuring
  • Check that you’re not accidentally entering a number instead of a letter, for example, “0” not “O”

Once you’ve checked all of these things, we’re pretty confident you won’t have any further issues.

Do you accept International Driving Licences?

Unfortunately, we cannot offer insurance to International Licence holders. We can provide cover for full UK, NI, and EU licence holders only.
