Yes, temporary car insurance is fully legal and legitimate. It’s a short-term solution (Tempcover offers comprehensive cover from one hour to 28 days) that is flexible to your needs and can be taken out alongside an annual policy. People generally take out temporary insurance when they need to arrange something quickly and do not need a full 12-month policy.
Tempcover is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority No: 746985. Registered in England, Company NoL 9923259.
Our website can be found at www.tempcover.com and we will refer to our company as Tempcover or Tempcover.com. All other naming conventions (e.g. Tempcover Now) are not legitimate.
If you suspect anything suspicious, please email [email protected] or report the activity to https://www.actionfraud.police.uk.
The details of the Motor Insurers Database (MID) will be shown on your policy confirmation email.
Once you’ve purchased a temporary insurance policy, your insurance details will shortly be passed to the MID. We have 7 days to supply your details to the database and so it is possible your policy may have expired before the details appear on the MID using askMID.
We recommend that you print your Insurance Certificate and have this with you as this remains valid proof of your insurance and legal entitlement to drive the vehicle.

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the only central record of all insured vehicles in the UK. The tool used to check if a vehicle is on the MID is AskMID.
As one of the most important tools to ensure that only insured vehicles are driven on our roads, the MID is used by the police and the DVLA to enforce motor insurance law.
The police use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with information from the MID to identify and catch people driving uninsured vehicles. More than 500 are seized every day and one person every three minutes is convicted for uninsured driving.
The MID is also systematically compared with the DVLA’s registered keeper records to identify uninsured vehicles from the record. Just like the DVLA, you can check your vehicle is appearing on the MID for free using AskMID.

Unfortunately we have no way of speeding up this process for you; but if you find that your vehicle is not showing on the MID after 7 days since your policy started, please get in touch and we will look into this for you.
As long as you’ve received your Certificate of Insurance, and you drive within the times stated on your certificate, you are insured to drive. You do not need to wait for the upload to be completed.
We highly recommend that you print or screenshot your Insurance Certificate and carry these with you as they remain as valid proof of your insurance and legal entitlement to drive the vehicle. You can present these to anyone who requires confirmation of your insurance status.
Once a policy is purchased we are unable to make any changes or amendments to the policy.
Before purchasing a policy, you must agree to our Terms and Conditions which state “By clicking Agree and Continue you are confirming you have read, accepted and understood all terms and conditions as laid out in the full declaration and that “You accept that once a policy has been purchased it is not possible to amend any details and it is non-refundable.”
With this in mind, we cannot make changes, or additions, or offer refunds on policies of 30 days or less in duration. We also do not offer partial refunds of any kind for days not used. In situations where an error has been made, we would always encourage you to get in touch with our Customer Experience Team as soon as possible. You can submit a query to them via the Contact Us page, to discuss your options.
No Claims Bonus is not applicable to short term policies, so whilst any existing No Claims Bonus is unaffected by our policies, we can’t produce any proof of no claims for this reason.
