Tipper trucks or dump trucks as they are sometimes called may not be your usual mode of transport but for many construction workers, it’s one of the most common vehicles on site.
Primarily used to transport and deliver loose material such as sand or to remove rubble from a building site, tipper trucks play a versatile yet crucial role in the construction industry.
They’re also one of the few construction vehicles that need to be as comfortable on the perilous construction site off-road areas as they are on everyday roads.
While their toughness and adaptability mean that they’re pretty indestructible, given how important they to your operation you won’t want to take any risks when it comes to tipper truck insurance.
For many reasons, should something happen to your tipper or because of an accident involving it, you could end up with a hefty bill if you’re not properly insured.
Their sheer size means that accidents can easily happen and whether it’s while backing-up or when dropping off a load, should something go wrong, there can be serious consequences.
Not only can there be damage to others but if something breaks on your tipper truck the cost of repairing or replacing parts can be incredibly expensive.
Insuring your truck is not only a legal requirement but could save you thousands of pounds, if not more should the worst happen.
One way to save even more money is by only paying for the cover you need with temporary insurance.
Temporary tipper truck insurance
There are a number of everyday situations where you may need to insure your tipper truck for a few days or weeks and don’t want to have to pay for a whole years’ worth of cover.
You could be buying a new or pre-owned truck and want to get it to the site or to into storage while you arrange annual cover. You might be borrowing a truck for a few weeks for a particular job or you could have a new employee starting work that you want to be insured straight away.

Restrictions on the policy
While we work with a panel of insurers to ensure we cover as many drivers, vehicle types, and for as many situations as possible, each insurer has their own restrictions on what you can and can’t be covered for.
It’s not too much of a stretch to assume that a tipper truck isn’t the everyday vehicle that you use to drop your kids off at school or do the weekly shop (although you would have plenty of room for all your bags for life).
Assuming you’ll be using your truck primarily for business use, you’ll need a policy that doesn’t restrict you from using your vehicle for business.
With temporary dump truck insurance from Tempcover, you’re covered for certain business activates which is commonly known as Business Class 1. This means you’re able to use the vehicle for your own business or trade purposes.
You are however restricted from using the vehicle for commercial travelling, hire or reward, or to transport any hazardous goods or to be driven at a hazardous location.
There are other restrictions on the short term van insurance product including age (you must be aged 17-77), how many points you’ve had on your licence (no more than 6 in the past 2 years) and how long you’ve held your licence (minimum 6 months for UK licence and 12 months for EU licence).
There is also a restriction on the weight of your tipper truck. Currently, we are unable to offer cover to any vehicle which weighs more than 7.5 tonnes. The vehicle must also be in a roadworthy condition with a current and valid MOT (unless you are using the insurance policy to take the vehicle to a pre-booked MOT). It must also be taxed (unless you are using the insurance policy to obtain tax for the vehicle immediately after purchase) and not declared SORN.
While this may stop owners of larger tipper trucks from getting cover, we are confident we can offer temporary insurance to a wide range of trucks.
