The UK’s best seaside spots for parking

The summer holidays are coming… Have you planned your next trip to the beach?

With all the excitement of planning the day and seeing who can see the sea first, sometimes the practical aspects of getting there and paying for parking (a not insignificant cost) get a little lost.

We’re here to help. Recent Tempcover research has revealed the best and worst UK beaches for parking based on the following criteria:

  • Number of reviews
  • Review ratings
  • Average cost of parking for four hours

We analysed the data to give each location a score out of 10.

What is the best UK beach for parking?

The Blue Flag Award-winning Mablethorpe beach on the East Coast came top of the list. A sandy beach close to a traditional seaside town with a fairground, cafes, fish and chips, crazy golf and donkey rides.

Top tips for your next beach trip

Before heading to the coast, you should make sure your car is in full working order. The last thing you’ll need is a flat tyre or dead battery ruining your plans, especially if you have kids (of all ages) who are eager to make sandcastles, eat ice cream and conquer the 2p machines.

Other things you can do to make your trip to the seaside a more enjoyable ride:

  • Top up all your fluids before setting off and make sure you have enough petrol. Check your battery level and ensure lights, indicators and wipers are all working.
  • Pack your car but don’t overload it. This could cause damage to your vehicle and potentially land you a fine of at least £100. If you’ve got too much stuff to take, one option is to borrow a bigger car from a friend or family member. Temporary car insurance offers comprehensive coverage for just the time you need - anything from one hour to 28 days.
  • Bring water, snacks, sun cream and a first-aid kit for both the journey and your time on the beach.
  • Plan your journey. As soon as the sun shines in the UK, people drop their plans and head to the beach. If you leave early and know where you’re going, you might beat the traffic and get a prime parking spot.
  • Once parked, make sure you keep any valuables out of sight and double-check your vehicle is locked. Read any signs regarding parking as you won’t want to receive an unexpected fine.

It’s important to stay protected when you go to the seaside. Keep applying that sunscreen and make sure your car is covered. Temporary car insurance can help you do this.

Methodology

This research explores some of the UK’s best beach and seafront destinations for parking, based on the average cost and review rating of at least four parking locations within a 40-minute walk of the beachfront postcode.

A seed list of popular beachfront destinations was compiled using existing research and round-up articles, until 30 locations met all criteria.

Parking locations and prices were sourced from Parkopedia using each beachfront postcode. Costs were collected for a four-hour stay on Saturday 15 August. Where a four-hour option was unavailable, the closest available duration covering four hours was used. Premises and station car parks were excluded, along with any locations that had a maximum stay of less than four hours.

Using the postcodes listed for each parking location on Parkopedia, the average Google review rating for each car park was recorded. Where a review rating was unavailable or a matching Google listing could not be identified, the car park was removed from the dataset.

Average Google review score was taken by weighting the score for each beach against the number of reviews left for that beach.

The average parking cost and Google review score for each location were then calculated, scored out of 10, and combined to produce the overall ranking.

Data collected between April and May 2026.
