With the low cost of fuel and road tax, motorcycles and mopeds are a popular choice among young riders, but finding temporary motorbike insurance for under 25’s can be a challenge, and temporary motorbike insurance for under 21’s even harder to come by.
If you’re borrowing a bike for a weekend or test driving a potential purchase, temporary cover is perfect for riding a bike you don’t own, but need to use on a short-term basis.
All insurance premiums are calculated by assessing a number of different risk factors, from your job to where you store your bike and especially your age.
The lack of riding experience and the reputation of young riders means that many young motorcyclists will find getting cover difficult and nearly always expensive.
To help boost your chances of getting cover and lowering your insurance premiums, young riders are encouraged to choose more sensible mopeds and bikes that haven’t been modified. Premiums are likely to be cheaper if the bike is kept in a secure, locked building overnight to reduce the risk of them being damaged or stolen.
Another way to keep the costs down is to only pay for the cover you actually need. Adding unnecessary extras to your policy can mean the price shoots up.
For example, if you only want to drive on a weekend away or in an emergency, then paying for a years’ worth of cover is needlessly expensive. If you want insurance from 1 day to 7 days then a temporary policy is perfect for you.
A temporary motorcycle policy gives you comprehensive cover as standard, when you need to ride a friend or family member’s bike. It’s great for a range of situations young riders might find themselves in.
If you’re looking to purchase a new bike, naturally you’re going to want to test it out first. Many insurers are unwilling to help out younger riders. For a one-off ride, temporary insurance is great because you only pay for the cover you actually need.
Without a temporary policy, you would have to adjust either yours or the sellers existing one, which can come with excessive admin fees and possibly increase annual premiums.
With short term motorbike insurance for young people, you pay a one-off fee to cover you for the duration you’ve selected. And as it’s a separate policy, it won’t affect any no claims discount anyone has.
If your motorcycle is off the road because it’s in for repairs or a service, you could find that you’re unable to get around. For most riders, a bike is their main form of transport so without it, you could be stuck.
One option is to borrow a bike from a friend or family member while your ride is being sorted. To borrow someone’s motorbike you’ll need to make sure you’re properly insured to do so. Even if you’re just borrowing it for a day, without the proper insurance, you could face penalty points and an unlimited fine.
A temporary policy covers you to ride anyone’s bike as long as you have their permission. It’s quick and easy to get a policy, so if you’re bike breaks down at short notice, you can arrange your cover in minutes.
These are just two of many situations where temporary motorcycle insurance for young riders can be a real lifesaver.
Getting a quote is simple and straightforward and will only take a couple of minutes online.
You must enter some basic information about yourself and the bike you want to be insured to use. Be sure to have your license number and the number plate of the motorcycle handy, as you’ll need these to purchase a policy.
