Frequently asked temporary insurance questions

Below, we have listed some of the most frequently asked temporary insurance questions from our customers. We hope these will answer your query; however, if you have a question which isn't answered on this page, please do get in touch and we'd be happy to help.

Price guarantee

What are the terms and conditions of the price guarantee?

* Terms and conditions apply. Price match is only available when a competitor quotation is emailed to pricematch@tc247.co.uk. The offer excludes policies for periods of less than 2 days and for drivers aged under 25. Cover provided must be equivalent to that available through tempcover.com and is subject to a maximum discount of £7.50.

Why do your premiums seem expensive compared to an annual policy?

The cost of a policy depends on a number of factors such as age, location and type of vehicle being used. If any of these factors changed then the price of a policy can increase or decrease.

A temporary motor insurance policy may appear more expensive compared with an annual policy for several reasons:

  • Temporary insurance can be purchased and can start immediately which means we can't take into account any no-claims discount you may have built up. This would involve collecting proof from your previous/current annual insurance policy provider.
  • When a vehicle is insured with an annual policy, it is not in constant use i.e. will be parked at work, left on driveway for periods of time etc. Usually a short term policy is specifically purchased to drive for the length of the policy for example, sharing a long drive so the risk for the insurer is much greater for the duration of the policy.
  • Typically, the car being driven by the policyholder will not be the vehicle they normally drive therefore the vehicle will be unfamiliar to them and therefore riskier. Many annual policies provide discounts for the long term ownership of the vehicle.
  • We do the same checks on the policyholder as an annual insurer. This can include identity and anti-fraud checks. We also have the same business administration costs such as IT, infrastructure and marketing which proportionally distort the premium for a temporary insurance policy compared to an annual policy.

Can I have a discount code?

If you opt in to our marketing, we do send out periodic emails and updates including discount vouchers. Also, keep a look out on our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter!

Getting started

Can I get immediate insurance cover?

Our panel of insurers could help!

Can I get insured on any vehicle?

We can provide short term insurance cover for a wide variety of vehicles, including classic cars, campervans, motorhomes, vans up to a gross vehicle weight of 7,500kg and motorbikes providing:

  • The vehicle has not been modified.
  • The vehicle is right-hand drive (however we do accept left-hand drive motorhomes and caravanettes).
  • The vehicle is registered in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man.

Tempcover can cover social, domestic and pleasure, and personal business use on cars. On vans we can cover social, domestic and pleasure, carriage of your own goods and carrying goods for hire and reward. Motorbikes can only be used for social, domestic, pleasure and commuting purposes.

Unfortunately, our insurers will not allow you to carry passengers for hire or reward i.e. taxi.

Each insurer has its own acceptance criteria with regards to minimum vehicle values. Please select the correct vehicle value when getting a quote.

I am only driving the vehicle for the day, do I really need insurance?

Yes. Driving a vehicle on a road or in a public place without any insurance is illegal. If you are caught by the police driving a vehicle without insurance you may incur a £300 on the spot fine and 6 penalty points being added to your licence. If the case goes to court, you could get a fine of up to £5,000 and be disqualified from driving. The police also have the power to seize, and in some cases, destroy the vehicle that's being driven uninsured.

How secure is this site?

Your financial transactions are processed via our payment providers' secure servers and our site is protected by an encryption certificate verified by the Thawte Certificate Signing Authority.

Can I get a quote if I don't know the registration number?

Yes. Just select your vehicle from our list to get a quote. If you do decide to take out a policy you will then be asked for the vehicle registration number.

How do I get my policy documents?

We will email them to you within 1 hour of you buying your policy. In the unlikely event you do not receive your documents, please do contact us. If you have chosen the postal delivery option we will post your documents to you on the next working day.

Can I take out multiple policies?

Yes. It is possible to take out more than one policy in most instances.

How do I insure a vehicle that is not listed?

We are only able to insure those vehicles found on our website.

Why am I unable to get cover?

In most circumstances we are able to offer cover. However, sometimes you may find instances where our underwriters are unable to offer you a policy. This could be due to a number of factors such as the postcode area, the age of the driver and/or the type of vehicle you wish to insure. However, we are constantly expanding our panel of insurers to widen the scope of what we are able to cover. Please keep us in mind, as you may find we can help you in the near future.

What can I do if I need to extend my temporary motor insurance policy?

It's important that you select the correct number of days when you make your purchase. Due to the short term nature of our policies it is not possible to extend your policy beyond the chosen date and time.

Can I buy Road Tax with my Tempcover insurance policy?

The DVLA and most UK Post Offices will accept insurance certificates which have been downloaded from the Internet for road fund licence purposes. Please be aware that not all of our insurers offer cover for this purpose but this information is displayed when selecting an insurer. For more information about purchasing vehicle tax, please visit https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/car-tax-discs.

Can I use a Tempcover certificate to recover an impounded vehicle?

We have a specific scheme which will provide you with a valid certificate needed to release your car or van from a police impound. On the website, you will need to select the 'impounded cars' product tile. Alternatively, if you are phoning our call centre, be sure to make them aware your vehicle is impounded and therefore it is an impounded policy that you require. Our standard policies are not valid for recovering vehicles from a police impound. You must be the registered keeper/owner of the vehicle and have a full UK driving licence.

Is it possible to make amendments after insurance to recover an impounded vehicle?

The policy is to be used to release an impounded car or van. The insurance period is for 30 days due to a national police protocol on releasing impounded vehicles, no amendments to cover can be made and there is no refund available for cancellation of this insurance after the vehicle has been released.

What vehicles do we cover?

What vehicles can I insure?

Do you insure rented/hired/leased vehicles?

We are currently unable to offer cover for hired vehicles i.e. from Hertz or Avis but we can offer cover from one insurer for hired commercial vehicles. We can cover leased or hire-purchase vehicles. We can also cover demonstrator and courtesy vehicles but this does not extend to travel outside of the UK.

My car is worth £250, can I still get a Tempcover policy?/My car is worth £80,000, can I still get a Tempcover policy?

Each of our insurers has different rules with regard to minimum and maximum vehicle values. If you're unsure of the value of your vehicle, please try one of the vehicle valuation websites such as Parkers or Glass's.

Who we cover

How long do I need to have held a licence to get insurance cover?

For temporary motorbike insurance, customers must hold a provisional or full motorcycle licence. For all other vehicles, you need to have held a current full UK driving licence for a minimum of 6 months or a full European Union licence for a minimum of 12 months, or hold a provisional driving licence.

Do you cover people with a provisional licence?

Yes, we do provide cover if you hold a provisional driving licence.

I have a criminal conviction; do I have to declare this? How?

We would recommend that you look at the 'Unlock' website. This is a site designed to help offenders understand the time periods for disclosing criminal convictions, and can be found at www.unlock.org.uk. We would also suggest looking at the www.disclosurecalculator.org.uk which establishes when criminal convictions become 'spent' under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This will give a clear indication as to whether you have to declare your conviction. In addition please read the declaration carefully for your chosen insurer when purchasing a policy from Tempcover as it provides crucial information on what they are prepared to accept.

I have a motoring related endorsement and /or conviction. Do I have to declare these? And how?

Any motoring offences resulting in an endorsement are still applicable up to five years after conviction. Even if these are no longer showing on your licence, they still apply and will need to be taken into consideration when applying for a policy from Tempcover. If you are unsure as to whether any conviction is still relevant then we would suggest you look at the 'unlock' website which is a site designed to help understand the time periods for disclosure. It can be found at www.unlock.org.uk. This will give a clear indication as to whether you have to declare your conviction. Please read the declaration carefully for your chosen insurer when purchasing a policy from Tempcover as it provides crucial information on what points/convictions are deemed acceptable.

Can you provide cover for residents outside the UK?

We are able to offer cover for cars and vans to UK 'ex-pats' who are resident in a country within the European Union but have previously lived in the UK and hold, or have held a full UK driving licence.

If a native EU resident, with an EU licence requires cover, then they must have moved permanently to the UK and have been resident here for a minimum amount of time depending on the insurer.

I have a driving licence issued by an EU member country; can I get a temporary motor insurance policy?

Our insurers can provide a quote to anyone who states they have a full EU Licence. As long as they have a licence that has been issued in a country within the EU, this is sufficient for us to proceed with a quote as long as all other criteria are met.

We are able to offer quotes to licence holders from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland who meet the criteria explained above.

Can I get insurance if I am under 21 years of age?

Yes, we provide learner driver insurance for people aged from 17 years, and standard temporary car insurance from age 18 years. We offer temporary motorbike insurance for customers aged from 19 years.

Can I get insurance if I am over 75 years of age?

No, unfortunately we are only able to provide insurance for people aged between 17 years to 75 years.

Can I insure more than one driver?

Yes, we offer the opportunity to add an additional driver. Simply select the option during the quote process.

Do I have to be the registered keeper of the vehicle to buy short term insurance?

No, you can purchase short term insurance on a vehicle that you do not own providing you have the owner's permission. However, if you need to purchase a policy to recover an impounded vehicle, the policy must be for the owner of the vehicle.

Why can't I get a quote?

Whilst frustrating, there can be a number of reasons that our insurers are unable to provide a quote. This could be because of the type of vehicle, location, age of the driver or length of time the driver has held their licence for. It is possible that in the future our insurers will be able to provide cover.

The cover

Short term motor insurance policy summary

Our standard motor policies provide comprehensive cover (subject to policy terms), which covers you in respect of your insurable interest in the vehicle subject to the excess level shown on your policy schedule. In the event of repairable damage the insurer's approved repairer will handle the repairs to the vehicle. In the event of total loss, any settlement will normally be negotiated with, and made to, the legal owner of the vehicle. The policy does not cover any liability to any party in respect of loss of use or availability of the vehicle. Damage to the vehicle from an accident, fire or theft is covered up to a limit of cover as specified on your policy documents. Customers with a standard motor policy have additional cover in respect of uninsured loss recovery (legal expenses).

For full terms, refer to the policy wording which can be found below in this section of this website or on your confirmation of policy email.

MID - Motor Insurers Database

How can I comply with the new vehicle insurance law which came into force in 2011 and what will happen if my vehicle is uninsured?

It is illegal to drive a vehicle without insurance and, from early 2011, it also became illegal to keep a vehicle without appropriate insurance unless it is declared 'SORN' (off the road). The DVLA are able to compare records with those held in the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and failure to insure your vehicle could lead to fines and/or your vehicle being seized and potentially destroyed. This new law has been introduced to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road.

Your insurance details will be passed to the Motor Insurance Database (MID), however due to the short-term nature of your policy it is possible your policy may have expired before the details are loaded into the database. We recommend that you print your certificate of insurance and have this with you whilst you drive the vehicle as this remains valid proof of your insurance and legal entitlement to drive the vehicle.

When will my policy show on the MID?

Your insurance details will be passed to the Motor Insurance Database (MID) within the timescales required by the MID, however, due to the short-term nature of your policy it is possible your policy may have expired before the details are loaded onto the database. We recommend that you print your certificate of insurance and have this with you whilst you drive the vehicle as this remains valid proof of your insurance and legal entitlement to drive.
