For many drivers, life isn’t always straightforward, and you could be one of the thousands looking to borrow or drive a new a car that you’re not already insured to use.
If you find yourself in one of these situations and you only need to use the vehicle for a few days or a week, you won’t want to pay for cover you don’t need.
Paying for an annual policy or even adjusting an existing one can be a time consuming and expensive experience that many people don’t need to do.
You may think that these are the only options you have but thanks to one week car insurance, you can get the insurance you need without paying for cover you don’t.
A 7 day policy gives you the peace of mind that when you’re using someone else’s car or a car you’re not familiar with, you’re covered should something go wrong.
Temporary car insurance works in essentially the same way as any other insurance policy – apart from a few key differences.
Short term cover offers flexible durations to suit your specific situation. Unlike an annual policy which is a set 12 month duration, a temporary policy can last from as little as 1 hour or daily up to 1 month.
While a one week policy could be ideal for you, you can get a longer or shorter policy depending on what you need it for.
With the policy, you get comprehensive cover as standard for the duration of the cover. This means you’re covered against damage to any third parties, any fire damage or theft to your own vehicle plus you’re also protected if there is any damage to the vehicle you’re driving.
Unlike other insurance options, temporary insurance is a separate, standalone policy which has no impact on any existing insurance on the vehicle.
This means that if you were to have an accident while driving someone else’s vehicle, their No Claims Discount won’t be affected. This can be really important if you’re borrowing a vehicle from someone else.
If you became a named driver on someone else’s policy and had an accident while driving, they would lose their No Claims Discount without potentially even being in the car.
By being a standalone policy, temporary insurance gives complete peace of mind to the driver and the vehicle owner.
A temporary policy lasts as long as you need it to and at the end of that duration, the policy expires and you’re no longer covered.
Yes, with temporary insurance from Tempcover, you’re able to add a named driver to the policy. If you’re borrowing a car and want to share the drive, adding an additional driver to your temporary cover is the best way for everyone to be insured to drive.
To add an additional driver to your policy, simply select ‘One additional driver’ while getting a quote and enter the details of the additional driver. If they’re not with you when you’re getting a quote, you’ll need to know the following information:
Getting a one week policy is quick and easy with Tempcover and takes just a couple of minutes. You’ll just need to answer some basic questions about yourself and the vehicle you want to drive.
You’ll need to provide the information we mentioned above only about yourself and you’ll also need to provide some contact details. This includes your address, your email, and your telephone number.
To get a quote you’ll also need the vehicle registration number and your reason for getting temporary cover.
Once you’ve entered your details, you’ll be presented with a range of quotes from our panel of insurers.
Select the policy which best suits your situation – remember you can adjust the amount of excess you’re willing to pay which could reduce the price of your policy.
You can also add a number of affordable extras like UK Breakdown & misfuel cover or gadget cover to your policy for extra peace of mind.
Now you’ve customised your policy and got the cover you need, you’ll visit the payment page. You can purchase your temporary policy in a number of different ways including:
The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the national database for insured vehicles and it’s what insurers and authorities use to check that car insurance is in place.
When you purchase a policy from Tempcover your details will be uploaded to the MID. While we do update the database daily, it can take up to seven days for the details to appear when you search for them online.
As you may guess, with a one week policy it’s very likely that either your details appear after your policy has started or your policy may have even expired by the time they appear on the database.
You may be worried that this means you’re not properly insured but don’t worry, we can assure you that if you’ve purchased a policy and have received your certificate of insurance, you’re properly insured.
If you find that your details haven’t yet appeared on the MID and you’ve bought a policy, we recommend you keep a copy of your certificate of insurance with you. You can either print it out or keep the digital copy on your phone.
This certificate is valid proof of insurance and is all you’ll need if you are stopped by the Police or you need to prove your insurance.
